Scourge surprises himself with the flash of protective ferocity he feels as his alternate stumbles that telling step closer to him. If anything proves that there's hope for saving the other Scourge from himself, it's this - that he'd back away from the Neutral, and towards one of his own. Because that's the way it should be.
Maybe Auspex could have given him peace, but what would have been left would have been some sort of permanent convalescent, not Scourge-the-Unicronian-Decepticon. And the latter, specifically, is what he and the other two came back to retrieve.
